Meet a 30-foot bull. Hunt for a giant troll. See an authentic Danish windmill. Find a tree growing in the middle of a road. Add fall colors, trails, pastries, ice cream, local shops, and miles of western Iowa countryside, and you've got the makings of a memorable family road trip.

The Western Skies Scenic Byway travels 142 miles through Harrison, Shelby, Audubon, and Guthrie counties. With easy access from I-29 on the west and I-80 on the east, it's an easy fall getaway from Omaha, Des Moines, and communities throughout Iowa and the Midwest.

Best of all, there's no need to see everything.

Think of this itinerary as a menu, not a checklist. Pick the stops your family will enjoy most, linger at your favorites, and save something for next time.

Choose Your Direction

Starting from I-29 or the west? Begin near Missouri Valley and travel east toward Elk Horn. Make it a one-day adventure and head home, or stay overnight and continue east toward Stuart on Day 2.

Starting from I-80 or the east? Begin in Stuart and travel west toward Elk Horn. Head home after a day of exploring, or stay overnight and continue west toward Missouri Valley on Day 2.

Elk Horn and the Danish Villages make a natural midpoint for either adventure.

Western Gateway | Missouri Valley, Logan, Woodbine & Portsmouth

At the western end of your adventure, the Western Skies Scenic Byway connects with the I-29 corridor near Missouri Valley. Make a whistle stop at the Watson Steam Train & Depot for a fun ride on their miniature train.

Between Missouri Valley and Harlan, you get to choose your route.

Follow the route through Logan and Woodbine to explore small-town downtowns, browse locally grown and made products at One Farm Market in Logan, or grab the famous pork tenderloin at Nutshelle’s Dairy Sweet in Woodbine.

Or explore the Portsmouth Spur, following Highway 44 between Harlan and Highway 30 north of Missouri Valley.

Making a round trip from the west? Take one route on the way out and the other on the way home for even more Western Skies scenery.

Traveling with a dog? Little Willow Dog Park in Missouri Valley gives four-legged family members a chance to stretch their legs before the next stretch of your journey.

Take a break from the road in Harlan, where food, shopping, and outdoor recreation make it easy to customize your stop.

Grab a bite at popular farm-to-table restaurant Milk & Honey or spend some time exploring the historic downtown square.

When fall color is calling, head to nearby Prairie Rose State Park. Enjoy the lake, take a short walk beneath the changing leaves, or make the park a bigger part of your family's outdoor adventure.

Spend an hour or spend an afternoon. It's your road trip.

The Danish Villages | Find a Troll & See the Windmill

Get ready for one of the most memorable stops along Western Skies.

Elk Horn and Kimballton celebrate the area's rich Danish heritage—and give families plenty of reasons to get out of the car.

Explore the Museum of Danish America, then head outside and see if your family can find the giant Thomas Dambo troll tucked into the museum's prairie landscape.

Visit Elk Horn's authentic Danish Windmill, explore neighboring Kimballton, and make room for a Danish treat from The Kringle Man Pastries.

Hungry for more? Larsen's Pub and The Norse Horse Tavern are among the local options to add to your adventure.

The Danish Villages also make a natural turnaround point for a one-day trip or overnight stop for a two-day adventure.

Audubon Area | Meet a Bull & Find a Tree

There's something big waiting in Audubon.

Meet Albert the Bull, the town's 30-foot-tall Hereford and one of western Iowa's most recognizable roadside attractions. Snap a family photo, then decide where the road takes you next.

Bringing bicycles? Add a ride on the T-Bone Trail. Choose a comfortable out-and-back section or make bicycling a bigger part of your day.

Have extra time—and a taste for the unusual? Venture toward Brayton to find the Tree in the Middle of the Road. Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. Because it's a little farther from the main byway, consider this one a bonus adventure when your schedule allows.

When hunger strikes, Darrell's Place in Hamlin is another local favorite to work into your trip. It's home to Iowa's original #1 pork tenderloin.

Eastern Gateway | Guthrie County, Springbrook, Whiterock & Stuart

The eastern portion of Western Skies offers a simple question: How outdoorsy do you want to get?

For wooded trails and classic Iowa fall scenery, explore Springbrook State Park. Stop for a quick walk beneath the changing leaves or give yourself more time to hike and explore.

For a bigger outdoor adventure, head to Whiterock Conservancy, where families can spend more time hiking, bicycling, and exploring the landscape.

Or simply enjoy the drive through Guthrie Center and Panora as the byway winds through the hills and valleys toward Stuart and I-80.

Instead of turning around, stay overnight near the middle of the route and pick up the adventure the next morning.
