Golden Hills is working with NRCS and other partners to inventory PL-566 watershed structures across Iowa and provide trainings about operation & maintenance. This is part of the Watershed Protection & Flood Prevention Operations (WFPO) program.

June 2025 Sponsor Trainings
The following trainings were held in 2025 for project sponsors of PL-566 structures. Sponsors typically include county boards of supervisors and Soil & Water Conservation District commissioners. County engineers, Emergency Management, Conservation, and other relevant personnel were also invited to attend.
Denison - Tuesday, June 3 - 10am-Noon (registration closes 6/2 at 10am)
Hinton - Tuesday, June 3 - 3-5pm (registration closes 6/2 at 3pm)
Creston - Friday, June 6 - 10am-Noon (registration closes 6/6 at 10am)
Atlantic - Friday, June 6 - 3-5pm (registration closes 6/6 at 3pm)
Fairfield - Monday, June 9 - 10-12am (registration closes 6/8 at 10am)
Albia - Monday, June 9 - 3-5pm (registration closes 6/8 at 3pm)
Virtual - Wednesday, June 11 - 3-5pm (registration closes 6/10 at 3pm)
Please note the Decorah training was canceled due to low registration.
Please register at least one business day in advance (Friday for those on Monday). Location & more details will be emailed the day before the event to those who registered.
These trainings are similar to but different than trainings in 2024 that were geared to those performing inspections of PL-566 structures. Those trainings and field visits were to show how to do an inspection.
This second round of trainings in spring 2025 is for those responsible for directing that the Operation & Maintenance Inspections be completed. Typically this is by the local SWCD, but many counties have dams located on county roads. Additionally, many county roads are impacted by dams which protect downstream roads and bridges. Some Districts also rely on funds from the county Board of Supervisors to provide any necessary maintenance.
